Pic of the Day: “He’ll Never See Daylight” revisited

Today’s pic takes another look at Matty Trifon, the gangster who enjoys nothing more than taking his friends out to dinner and stuffing them with yummy food. He appeared in the very first Baretta episode, “He’ll Never See Daylight”. It first aired on January 17, 1975 and was directed by the legendary Bernard L. Kowalski.

I am fairly certain that the actress portraying Matty’s confused girlfriend is Judith Hanson, who is helpfully listed in the credits as “Girl”. I am also fairly certain that she is the same Judith Hanson who is now a country singer with a CD entitled Even Perfectly Nice People Go to Jail. She has this to say on her CDBaby artist page: “I was a child entertainer and became a top model in New York. I did national commercials and then went to Hollywood where I worked on television and some movies. I started writing songs for a very unusual reason and it turned into a business. Now I own my own publishing company, Hanson Payday Publishing, and I’m ready to cash in my chips!”

It’s time to take another look at “Quaker Girl,” the episode of Gunsmoke that first aired on December 10, 1966. It’s the second of two episodes of the legendary Western series in which Timothy appears. Charles “Buster” Rilla is the hulking muscle behind a couple of gold-hungry outlaws.

Tim was directed for the second time here by the prolific Bernard L. Kowalski, who memorably let Tim have his head with his characterization of gangster Matty Trifon in the Baretta pilot, “He’ll Never See Daylight” (1.17.75).

We kick off the week with another look at the premiere Baretta episode, “He’ll Never See Daylight”, directed by Bernard L. Kowalski. It was first broadcast on January 17, 1975. Fashion plate gangster Matty Trifon shows up for his butt-kicking by Baretta (Robert Blake).

This is the only one of Timothy’s four appearances on Baretta that is officially available on DVD. Here’s hoping the powers-that-be see fit to release the series in its entirety sometime soon.

It’s time for another look at the premiere episode of Baretta, “He’ll Never See Daylight”. It first aired on January 17, 1975. Garrulous gangster Matty Trifon is enjoying a night on the town with his boss and their girlfriends. I am not sure who the actress is playing Matty’s rather confused moll; it might be Judith Hanson. Anyone know for sure?

This was another episode directed by the legendary Bernard L. Kowalski, who apparently was not afraid to let Timothy have his head when it came to characterization. The infamous begloved chicken-eating scene follows shortly after this shot.

Pics of the Day: “Chesty Anderson U.S. Navy”

Happy Monday! Unfortunately we kick off the week with what is undoubtedly the ghastliest film Timothy ever appeared in – Chesty Anderson U.S. Navy (1976). I’ve only posted one pic from this so far, because the film is so onerous that I can’t even bear to fast forward through it to get to Tim’s scenes – that, my friends, is how bad it is. However, it seems that the good proprietor of Gastrocinema has done our work for us. Behold – animated .gifs of Timothy as utterly insane mobster Vincent the Terrible, partying with the stunned Marcie Barkin and the buxom Pat Parker during the dinner scene. He also dons the same white gloves and eats chicken in the same ecstatic manner as he did in the Baretta episode “He’ll Never See Daylight” (1.17.75). The gloves appeared later on Flo in The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976).

Co-star Rosanne Katon told Shock Cinema magazine that the production of this film was “chaotic”: “That’s another one where we had new pages every day, three directors – after a while it was like, ‘How do I get out of this?!’ It was one absurd situation after another. I think I stayed on just to watch Timothy Carey around the Craft Services table! He was certifiable. I mean, he was climbing the walls. They almost had to get a net just to pull him over so he could say his lines, and then he’d wander off again. It was insane. They had all these garbage trucks around, and girlfriends of the investors – when I wasn’t laughing at what was going on, I was reading a book in the corner. I’ll put it that way.”

Today’s pic takes another look at Matty Trifon, the glove-wearing, chicken-loving mobster of “He’ll Never See Daylight,” the inaugural episode of Baretta that first aired on January 17, 1975. Matty is in a somber mood as takes a phone call from his boss Frank Cassell (Joseph Mascolo) to discuss that pest Baretta (Robert Blake).

Television legend Bernard L. Kowalski directed this episode. He also directed Timothy in the Rawhide episode “The Book” (1.8.1965), the Gunsmoke episode “Quaker Girl” (12.10.1966), the Columbo episode “Fade In to Murder” (10.10.1976), and the TV movie Nightside (1980). I’m guessing he had a few tales to tell about working with Tim! I wish I could have had a chance to talk to him before he passed away in 2007.

It’s time to take another look at the very first Baretta episode, “He’ll Never See Daylight,” which first aired on January 17, 1975. Timothy is garrulous gangster Matty Trifon, encouraging his dinner companions to eat, drink and be merry at a Middle Eastern restaurant. What he fails to notice is Baretta himself (Robert Blake) lurking over his shoulder, in disguise as a fez-topped waiter. I am not sure who the actress portraying Matty’s bemused girlfriend is.

Romeo Carey told me that Tim once said that you could tell a person’s character by how well they spoke about their father. Blake, according to Tim, spoke disparagingly about his father. Tim also called Blake “a wise guy.” Glean from that what you will.

Today’s pic is another one from the Baretta pilot episode, “He’ll Never See Daylight,” first broadcast on January 17, 1975. Gangster Matty and his boss Frank Cassell (Joseph Mascolo) are enjoying an evening at a Middle Eastern restaurant with their girlfriends.

Baretta himself (Robert Blake) is in disguise as one of the fez-topped waiters in the background. The belly dancer is not credited – who is she?? Mascolo has been a hard-working television actor for over 50 years, especially on the soap operas The Bold and the Beautiful and Days of Our Lives.

YES some kind soul put this up on YouTube! OK folks. Our video for this week is the Baretta pilot episode “He’ll Never See Daylight,” which first aired on January 17, 1975. It was directed by the legendary Bernard L. Kowalski. Tim is a hood by the name of Matty Trifon, who likes bellydancers and chicken.

The scene in the Middle Eastern restaurant where Tim puts on the white gloves and devours the chicken starts about 30 minutes in. Don’t miss it. It’s hilarious.
