Today we take another gander at The Last Wagon (1956), shot in Arizona by director Delmer Daves. Tim and George Mathews are on the trail of Richard Widmark‘s Comanche Todd.
My MSTie pals will recognize Mathews as the overworked guardian angel of the short X Marks the Spot (1944). He enjoyed a long career on the stage and in movies and television.
The Timothy Carey Experience 
The Last Wagon is one of my favorite Widmark movies — I had no idea Timothy Carey was in it! It’s been years since I’ve seen it, maybe another look is due. 🙂

It’s a really great movie! Tim is only in it for a couple minutes near the beginning; Widmark kills him off rather quickly. Tim said in an interview that it was a very unpleasant experience for him. Apparently he “overreacted” when Widmark fake-stabbed him, and Widmark lost it and started kicking him for like 5 minutes after the shot was over. Talk about overreacting! It’s still a good movie though.

Ha! What a crazy story! I tell ya, I think things must have been different in Hollyweird back in the day — I remember reading story about Jack Palance clocking Widmark in the head with a real gun for a scene in Panic In The Streets because he felt the prop gun wasn’t real enough.
