Pic of the Day: “Teacher of Outlaws” revisited

Today we revisit “Teacher of Outlaws,” the excellent episode of The Big Valley which was first aired on February 2, 1966. Outlaw Preacher Clegg is glowering appropriately.

Busy atmosphere player and stunt man Cap Somers has an uncredited bit in this episode. He and Timothy became friends, and he went on to appear in Tim’s as-yet-unseen magnum comedy opus, Tweet’s Ladies of Pasadena.

To celebrate the birthday anniversary of the legendary Barbara Stanwyck (105 years ago today!), today’s pic revisits “Teacher of Outlaws,” the episode of The Big Valley that first aired on February 2, 1966. Preacher Clegg is being told by his boss Sam Beldon (Harold J. Stone) to back off of Victoria Barkley.

Even though Victoria is old enough to be Clegg’s mother, that don’t make no never mind to him. This is one of the best episodes of the series, I think; well worth your time. Stanwyck’s spirit lives on in the hearts of the strong, sassy women she inspires daily. Long may she reign!

Today’s pic (and you remember about clicking to embiggen) revisits “Teacher of Outlaws,” in my opinion one of the finest episodes of The Big Valley. It was first broadcast on February 2, 1966. Preacher Clegg, the Scripture-quoting bad guy, and his cohort Julio (Pepe Callahan) are gloating over their latest nefarious plans.

Callahan, of Irish/Mexican heritage, was born Joseph Callahan in New Mexico. He often played characters of Latino descent on television and in films throughout the 1960s and 70s. According to a relative, he took to drinking heavily, and passed away at the relatively young age of 67.

Today’s pic (click for embiggening you will) is another from Tim’s appearance on The Big Valley. The episode is “Teacher of Outlaws,” which first aired on February 2, 1966. Scripture-spouting outlaw Preacher Clegg is making eyes at Victoria Barkley (Barbara Stanwyck), which is weird when you consider that she’s old enough to be his mother. But then, it is Miss Barbara Stanwyck after all.

Westerns were still a hot television property in the 1960s, and Tim appeared in a bunch of them – The Virginian, Cowboy in Africa, Rawhide, Cimarron Strip, Daniel Boone.

Video of the Week: “Teacher of Outlaws”

It’s Wednesday and you know what that means – time for the Video of the Week. Today we feature Tim’s appearance in The Big Valley episode “Teacher of Outlaws,” which first graced TV screens on February 2, 1966. He portrays Preacher Clegg, a Scripture-quoting bad guy.

It’s weird to see him making eyes at a woman old enough to be his mother, but it is Miss Barbara Stanwyck after all.

Our pic of the day is almost the very first thing you see in The Big Valley episode “Teacher of Outlaws,” first broadcast on February 2, 1966. Tim is Preacher Clegg, a bad guy known for quoting Scripture while being nefarious.

Big Valley

This episode was directed by Michael Ritchie, who went on to helm such memorable films as Smile, Prime Cut, The Candidate, Semi-Tough, and my personal favorite of his films, The Bad News Bears. We lost him, to prostate cancer at age 62, way too soon.
